1948 Gedling Colliery film

This 1948 film documents the ongoing modernisation of Gedling Colliery in Nottinghamshire, one of the deepest mines in the region.

The film concentrates on the way the pit had increased its output through the introduction of new technology, from cutting to conveying the coal from the face to the sorting plant (weighing it along the way) to the sorting process.

Sorting still has to be carried out by hand, but instead of physically picking up the coal, it’s now pushed into the correct chutes with the aid of rakes.
